6″ Steel Gas Line Installation at R. Tindall Fabricators

R.

R. Tindall Fabricators needed a robust gas supply upgrade to support the demands of their busy fabrication facility. Atmostherm was brought in to deliver a 6″ steel gas line installation running the full 60m length of the site, connecting to the existing gas infrastructure while meeting strict safety standards throughout.

This case study looks at the challenge faced by the client, the engineering approach taken by our team, and the results delivered on site.

The Challenge

R. Tindall Fabricators required a larger-diameter gas main to be routed through their industrial premises, connecting to the site’s existing gas supply and extending across the full length of the workshop. The new pipework needed to tie into the current red-coated gas line without disrupting ongoing operations, while also being securely supported along an extensive run that passed through brickwork, overhead steelwork, and around structural obstacles.

Given the scale of the site and the nature of the works, safety and compliance were front and centre. Any gas line installation of this size demands careful planning, precise fitting, and rigorous testing before it can be brought into service.

Our Approach

Planning and Connection Points

Our engineers began by assessing the existing gas infrastructure, identifying the optimal route for the new 6″ steel gas line installation to minimise disruption while ensuring the shortest, most efficient path across the building. A new isolation valve assembly was fitted at the connection point, clearly marked with yellow gas identification tape in line with industry convention.

The transition between the existing red gas pipe and the new stainless steel section was carried out using a flanged blue-bodied valve fitting, bolted securely and fitted with a lever handle for easy isolation. This gave the client a clear, accessible shut-off point right at the start of the new run.

Routing and Support

From there, the 60m run of steel pipework was carried up through the workshop, rising vertically before travelling horizontally along the underside of the roof structure. The pipe was routed alongside existing steelwork and crane rails, using purpose-fit brackets and clamps fixed directly to the yellow structural beams to keep the line firmly supported along its entire length.

Reducer fittings were used where the pipe diameter transitioned, and every joint was carefully aligned to maintain a clean, professional finish. Wall-mounted brackets were also installed at lower level sections to prevent any movement or strain on the pipework near ground level.

Testing and Handover

Once the pipework was in place, our team carried out thorough pressure testing and inspection to confirm the integrity of every joint and connection before the line was signed off. All work was carried out in accordance with the standards set by the Gas Safe Register and the Health and Safety Executive, ensuring the finished installation met all relevant safety and regulatory requirements.

Working Safely on a Live Industrial Site

Throughout the project, our engineers coordinated closely with R. Tindall Fabricators’ team to ensure the works were carried out with minimal disruption to daily operations. Key considerations included:

  • Careful routing of the 6″ steel gas line installation around existing crane rails and structural steelwork
  • Secure bracketing at regular intervals to support the full 60m run
  • Clear isolation and identification of the gas line using standard yellow marking tape
  • Full pressure testing and inspection prior to handover

Our team worked alongside site personnel at every stage, discussing routing decisions and fittings on site to make sure the finished installation matched the practical needs of the workshop.

The Result

The completed 6″ steel gas line installation now runs securely across the full 60m length of the R. Tindall Fabricators site, providing a reliable, code-compliant gas supply capable of supporting the demands of the fabrication workshop. The new isolation valve gives the client straightforward control over the supply, while the neatly routed and well-supported pipework keeps the installation tidy and out of the way of daily site activity.

This project is a good example of the kind of large-scale mechanical works Atmostherm regularly delivers for industrial clients, often working in tandem with wider commercial heating upgrades to ensure sites have the gas and heating infrastructure they need to operate efficiently.
