The existing gas fired heating boiler at Work For Change, Manchester, was becoming unreliable and costly to operate having been installed for over 17 years. Atmostherm have provided the servicing and maintenance to the equipment for many years but, due to obsolete boiler parts and high running costs, it was time to update the system to a more efficient form of heating.
Atmostherm were asked to provide advice on the different technologies available and at the same time reduce the building carbon footprint. We looked at the physical restraints of installing plant and equipment within the building and after carrying out a detailed heat loss calculation combined with running cost comparisons we provided a detailed design and specification that would reliably fulfil Work For Change’s heating requirements. The new heating system substantially reduced running costs and reduced the amount of CO2 being expelled into the surrounding environment, which was paramount to strengthen Work For Change’s eco philosophy.
After several site visits to accurately measure the building’s dimensions a working drawing was produced and this was approved by the customer.
The new design involved removing the existing boiler and associated plant from the first floor boiler room. A new boiler room was formed on the ground floor and a Trianco high efficiency Biomass 100kw boiler, complete with automatic pellet feed system, and a 1000lt thermal store vessel were installed. The new boiler was piped into the existing heating flow and return pipework, and was fitted with a new twin wall flue system. A RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) heat meter was installed within the heating pipework to measure the amount of heat being produced, which in turn submits to the RHI scheme for credits. A suitably sized wood pellet store was also formed within the boiler house and was fitted with auto fill valves.
Due to the high efficiency and low C02 emissions of the new heating system, Atmostherm were able to help Work For Change complete all the necessary RHI application forms, including boiler support documents and RHI heat meter details.
