What is Evaporative Cooling?

Evaporative cooling is a completely natural way of producing refreshing cool air within a warehouse or office building.

A simple ducted air distribution system delivers cool, fresh air to provide complete building coverage or spot cooling to any area.

A sophisticated process control unit, working in conjunction with naturally low water operating temperatures, ensures a hygienic and safe cooling system. Evaporative cooling typically costs around 10% of the usual running cost of a conventional air conditioning system, and has much lower installation costs too, making it a genuinely low-cost cooling solution for large commercial spaces.

The benefits of evaporative cooling

  • Uses only 10% of the electricity compared with conventional air conditioning
  • No refrigerants required
  • Supplies 100% fresh, cooled air rather than recirculated air
  • Low carbon dioxide footprint
  • Simple engineering with fewer moving parts to maintain
  • Low purchase cost compared to refrigerant-based systems
  • Performance actually improves in hot, dry conditions, exactly when you need it most

Is evaporative cooling right for your building?

Evaporative cooling works best in large, well-ventilated spaces such as warehouses, factories and industrial units, where fresh outside air can be drawn in and warm air allowed to escape. It’s generally less suited to enclosed offices or humid environments, where a conventional air conditioning system may be the better fit. Our engineers can assess your building during a free site survey and recommend whether evaporative cooling, air conditioning, or a combination of both is the right solution for your space. We have strong links to Breezair and are experts in installing their equipment.

How much can evaporative cooling systems save your business?

Running costs are where evaporative cooling systems really set themselves apart. Because there’s no compressor and no refrigerant cycle, a typical evaporative cooling system uses around 90% less electricity than a conventional air conditioning system of equivalent size. For a large warehouse or factory running cooling through the summer months, that difference can add up to a substantial saving on energy bills year after year.

Evaporative cooling systems also tend to have a longer working life, since there are fewer moving parts and no refrigerant gas to leak or replace over time. Combined with lower installation costs, this makes evaporative cooling one of the most cost-effective cooling solutions available for large commercial spaces.

If you’d like to know whether evaporative cooling systems are the right fit for your building, get in touch to arrange a free site survey. Our engineers will assess your space and advise honestly on whether evaporative cooling, conventional air conditioning, or a mix of both makes the most sense for you.

How does evaporative cooling work?

As warm air passes over wet filter pads water naturally evaporates into the air. The air is cooled as it gives up the heat required to evaporate the water. An evaporative cooling unit has filter pads, which are kept saturated with water when in ‘Cool’ Mode. Water from the sump is pumped over the pads via a water distribution system. An axial fan draws the air through the pads and into the air distribution system. Air passes through insect screens prior to the filter pads. Hygienic and efficient operation of an evaporative cooling unit is maintained by the most advanced water process controls available. Only pure water evaporates from the pads during evaporation. Salts will gradually concentrate and will eventually form scale unless a ‘bleed’ system is used. The water is drained before the scaling point is reached. The control system uses a unique four level water probe to determine the salinity level during the evaporation cycle. This system ensures the most efficient water use and can be easily adjusted to accommodate differing water quality.
